Easter cookies with mini roses – galletas de Pascua con mini rosas

April 3rd, 2013

I didn’t plan to make any cookies for Easter but my dear friend Path called to request some.  I usually decide in advance what shapes, cutter or color scheme I’m going to use but she needed the cookies for the next day, so I just use roses for inspiration.

Easter 2013- m5cake 9

I recently took my first cake decorating class (I’ll tell you the story later), and the instructor show us, how to make toothpick roses. I wanted to give it a try and this was the perfect opportunity.

Easter 2013- m5cake 6

Basically you pipe a rose using the common method but instead of a nail you use a toothpick as a base (it help you to move the rose around) then you insert in it a little piece of wax paper (this will support the mini rose). You need to use stiff consistency royal icing. Start piping the center of the rose in a circular motion and then the individual petal. I use tip #101 for this roses. Finally you take out the wax paper from the toothpick and let it dry for several hours.

Once I have the roses I just put them everywhere,

For the Easter eggs I combine them with this wet on wet roses

Of course you can make them in different sizes. You can see 3 different sizes here.

I really enjoy making these set of cookies because I use different techniques – stencils, pearls and splash painting. The inspiration came from Sugarbelle recent post.

I’m back with the Day of the Dead celebration!!!! ya regrese . . . no estaba muerta andaba de parranda Dia de Muertos

November 2nd, 2012

I spend months crying because all my 2012 posts get lost. One day at the end of June they just disappear and to add to the drama the back up I supposedly had . . . didn’t work. This blog is my hobby but still is a lot of work and time that get lost. I finally stop my lament because my followers in Facebook keep growing even though I’m not posting anything new since this happen. Thank you to all of you !!!!!.  So to close that horrible episode in my blogging life I will re post in the near future some of the cakes and cookies that get lost (you can still find all the pictures on my flickr account), but for now let’s celebrate “El Dia de Muertos” (Day of the Dead) . This is a celebration that really get close to my heart when I moved away from my hometown in Mexico. Is a beautiful tradition that honor our love ones that left before us . . .

Day of the Dead 2012

I had a lot of fun playing with an airbrush for the first time (just in the flowers). Not as hard as I thought but definitely I need to take some painting classes and practice a lot. My friend “Y” from my cake club hear that I want to experiment with airbrushing and kindly offer that I could borrow hers. Thank you “Y” you are super nice !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Day of the Dead 2012
I also played with painting with gel colors. All the details in black and some orange were made with a tiny paint brush.

Day of the Dead 2012

I also baked “Pan de Muerto” (Bread of dead ones) that is traditionally baked in Mexico for this celebration and one of my favorite breads. I craved it really bad when I was pregnant and even though you can find it here in San Antonio,  Texas . It is a really soft sweetbread, flavored with “agua de Azahar” (orange flower water) and decorated with bone-like pieces.

Day of the Dead 2012

The recipe for the bread is from “mis recetas favoritas” blog and turn out really good. The bread was fluffy and the flavor delicious. She has two recipes , I use the first one.

Day of the Dead 2012
Hope you enjoyed my take on this celebration and don’t forget to visit my last year “Day of the Dead Cake and cookies”  post. It feels good to be back, see you soon.

Happy Chinese New Year 2012 ! – Feliz Año Nuevo Chino 2012

January 23rd, 2012

Happy Chinese New Year 2012 !!!  Last year I make an amazing collection of cookies for the celebration of the Chinese New Year that you can find here part1, here part 2 and here part 3. The picture is at the end of this post. Was amazing not only because it was beautiful but because I make a lot of their traditional symbols and also share with you their meaning. All this bla, bla, bla is just to tell you that I couldn’t came up with any new ideas so I limit myself just to the Chinese Zodiac Calendar’s symbol for 2012 “The Dragon”.

Day of the Dead: Catrina cake and Calaveritas cookies – Dia de los Muertos Pastel de La Catrina y galletas de Calaverita

November 2nd, 2011

Today we celebrate el Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Mexico. Is a very important celebration because we remember and honor family or friends that are already enjoying heaven. Most people visit the cemeteries where their loved ones are buried and decorate their graves with ofrendas or altars that are rich in symbols and are a welcoming gesture for the souls that will be visiting during the festivity. The altars or offerings can also be built in their homes. Because I live far away from my family I just make these cake and cookies to celebrate my Mexican traditions and to share them with all of you.

Skulls sugar cookies

October 26th, 2011

I was in the supermarket the other day and saw another costumer with one reusable groceries bag with a skulls design that screamed “I want to be a cookie”. I try to get a mental picture of all the details but with 3 little kids around me it was almost impossible. So I head to the cashier’s area to get one just to find out that the bag was from the previous Halloween season and was not available anymore. Since then I have those cookies . . . I mean that design spinning in my head. Luckily for me, in a school event last week, a lady had the same bag and this time I have pen and paper to capture it. I was so excited and get everything ready in no time to start decorating them just to realize that I didn’t like how my 2 first attempts turn out.  So I ended up decorating them with anything and everything that came to my mind and this is the end result
