Military and Tank Cakes – Pasteles Militar y Tanque de guerra

Last weekend I prepared two cakes for my friend Isela’s son – Daniel that turn 7. His party had a “military theme” so my friend bought a camouflage edible image for me to put in the cake. That was the plan until Daniel ask for a military tank piñata, unfortunately the party place didn’t have that service. So to save the day (and because I was really excited with the opportunity to make a 3D cake) I volunteer to make him a military tank cake instead of the piñata. Aqui estan ambos:

The Tank was chocolate cake filled with chocolate cream mixed with coconut and caramelized walnuts, covered in chocolate ganache (by the way I found an excellent video on how to make and cover a cake with chocolate ganache to cover it with fondant and how get beautiful straight lines click here) and decorated with homemade fondant recipe here El Tanque era de chocolate relleno de crema de chocolate con coco y nuez garampiñada, cubierto con ganache de chocolate (por cierto que encontre un video excellente de como hacer y cubrir un pastel con ganache con el proposito de cubrirlo con fondant y obtener orillas derechitas aqui encuentran el video) y lo decore con fondant casero aqui encuentran la receta.

The edible image cake was a combination of vanilla and chocolate, with the same filling than the tank but covered with an old school – chocolate Italian meringue buttercream El pastel de la imagen comestible que tambien se conocen como tatuajes para pasteles era una combinacion de pastel de vainilla y chocolate, con el mismo relleno que el pastel de tanque pero cubierto con un tradicional – betun de merengue italiano de chocolate.

We have a lot of fun in the party, specially in the giant inflatable-slides and then was pizza and cake time. My friend didn’t want to cut the tank cake because I’m quoting “is too cute” so she start cutting the camo cake, however the kids didn’t agree with her, they wanted to try the other one.

Of course for them was more attractive and out of the ordinary, probably never try a fondant cake before or was the shape . . .no matter what they speak their voice loud and got what they wanted.

  2. Beautiful Job!! I am attempting to ganache cover my cake to cover with fondant but i was wondering if you refrigerated your cake after it was covered in ganache and before you put the fondant?

    • Joanna I check your FB pictures and your cakes are beautiful !!! Yes I refrigerate the cake before and after. Actually I crumb coat it with the ganache that has been resting the all night than I put it in the refrigerator to set, after that I apply the final coat of ganache and put it again in the refrigerator to set once it is set I put it outside for the ganache to dry. Once is totally dry I put the fondant. But for your cakes to be perfect please check this video I found, they give you all kind of details for the whole process . Hope it help you !!!

      • thanks for the compliment!!! I am just starting out and always nervous about the construction of the cake itself, as I do not have that much experience yet. My worry then, with this cake, stems from the fact that it will have a cream cheese filling. I am not sure about how to pull off doing the white choco ganache when, to keep the filling safe, it has to be in the fridge all the time. I might possibly scratch the whole idea of ganache for this cake, and do it with a more stable filling next time instead. I will def check out the link you posted though, I want to be prepared for next Thanks again for all your help!! 🙂
