I present you a fall inspired cake with wafer paper leaves. The cake was to celebrate two of my dear sugar friends birthdays , so it had to be something special.
Those that know me know that I love edible wafer paper. It is easy to use, cut any shape and it dries fast saving a lot of time.
For previous projects, I have successfully painted wafer paper with edible powder color, airbrush, edible ink in my printer or even with color gels using stamps. However this time I wanted to try Kara’s Couture Cakes technique to paint the wafer paper, she also use color gels but apply them using a sponge.
The steps are as follow:
- Airbrush your full wafer paper sheet with your choice of fall colors, mines are in yellow, orange, red, and brown. You can buy already colored wafer paper if you prefer.
- Once the wafer paper is dry (2-3 minutes) cut the leaves in the shape and size of your choice. I get some templates from the web.
- Using a small makeup sponge and gel color of your choice color the leaves specially around the edge with one color at the time. I use golden, ivory and red.
- Finally draw the veins with an edible marker
You can watch Kara’s Couture Cakes video explaining the technique in this video she make for Cake Fu. I know that she have some online classes including a Craftsy class.
The pumpkin is hand carved using a styrofoam egg covered in fondant . I created shadows in the pumpkin using “oyster” dust from The sugar Art. The sunflower and little daisies are also wafer paper except for the centers that are fondant. The cake is covered in chocolate ganache. Probably is not that visible in the pictures but I sprayed some gold color in the ganache with Wilton gold color mist.
