One of the easier and faster cake I have ever made but one of my favorites. The vibrant and bold colors match the personality of the lady that inspired it. The flowers are one of my first experiments with wafer paper. Petals and center of the flowers were paint with dust colors, leaves were spray painted.
Today we celebrate el Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Mexico. Is a very important celebration because we remember and honor family or friends that are already enjoying heaven. Most people visit the cemeteries where their loved ones are buried and decorate their graves with ofrendas or altars that are rich in symbols and are a welcoming gesture for the souls that will be visiting during the festivity. The altars or offerings can also be built in their homes. Because I live far away from my family I just make these cake and cookies to celebrate my Mexican traditions and to share them with all of you.
I wake up early the other day (5:30 am), something really unusual for me, as part of my training for school time . And found myself with nothing to do during those early hour of the day (like if I don’t have 3 loads of dirty clothes, 4 rooms to vacuum, etc, etc, etc) so I start working in a gum paste ballerina that was on my head for quite a while. And here she is in action.
Last weekend I prepared two cakes for my friend Isela’s son – Daniel that turn 7. His party had a “military theme” so my friend bought a camouflage edible image for me to put in the cake. That was the plan until Daniel ask for a military tank piñata, unfortunately the party place didn’t have that service. So to save the day (and because I was really excited with the opportunity to make a 3D cake) I volunteer to make him a military tank cake instead of the piñata. Aqui estan ambos:
Well maybe not that short but let me show you the cake that started everything for me in the sweet word . . . . .
Of course I have learn some things in these months if you compare it to these cakes I make last month . . . but lets go back to the story Por supuesto que ya he aprendido algunas cosas desde entonces si lo comparamos con estos que hice el mes pasado . . . pero regresemos a la historia
I really like how this cake and the mini-cupcake toppers turn out, specially the hobby horse; also I was happy because I had a chance to use new materials and practice some new techniques.
